Bucks Take Game 1 Against Pacers Despite Giannis Absence

Milwaukee Bucks began their first round play-off series against the Indiana Pacers with style, thrashing their opponents 109-94. Still, this was a victory for the team who lost their key player Damian Lillard Giannis Antetokounmpo because of a knee injury.

Damian Lillard Explodes in Bucks Debut

Damian Lillard was stepping up in Giannis’ absence, having been acquired by the Bucks in a blockbuster trade deadline move. As has been usual, Damian Lillard quickly stamped his authority as a scorer, finishing with 35 points, of which 23 were amassed in the first 24 minutes only. Lillard buried the Pacers and made the Bucks believe they could battle to a standstill even when missing their now potential MVP.

Damian Lillard Bucks Defense Stifles Pacers

Obviously, Damian Lillard’s scoring flurries stole the show, but Milwaukee’s defense cannot be forgotten, either. The team defended with passion and wanted it more making it extremely difficult for the Pacers to score and getting their shots up all night. Indiana offset much of the Bucks’ momentum as they failed to get into a good shooting flow offensively.

Damian Lillard Pacers Look to Bounce Back

However, the Pacers will be more prepared in Game 2 of the series after a blowout event like that occurs. To do this, they’ll have to figure out how to stop Lillard, who showed that he can be a weapon offensively for the Bucks. Also, maintaining a pace specifically relying on Giannis’ absence is paramount for them to stay competitive in playoff contention.

Looking Ahead

The Bucks took home court advantage away from Cleveland with a dominating Game 1 win. This means that Damian Lillard and the rest of the Bucks must keep the pace up; especially if there is still a question mark hanging over the head of Giannis for game two. The Pacers, however, will have to make major changes as sweet if they are to make the series even.

Damian Lillard’s Chemistry with Bucks Backcourt

The most critical concern that many people had with regard to the Lillard trade was how the new signing would fit into the team which already has Jrue Holiday. Although the target sample is small, some promising activities had been observed at such beginning. Lillard and Holiday had moments of great synergy and even occasionally caught each other for open threes and conducted pick-and-rolls well. In defending their title offensively, the Bucks might really rely on Gray and Looney’s capability to feast on their opponent jointly if Antetokounmpo misses games in the playoffs.

Pacers Search for Offensive Answers

The Pacers’ offense is mostly centered on Domantas Sabonis in the post position, and had no answers to give against Milwaukee’s bigs and quicks. Sabonis, who averages 20-plus in the average, was limited to only 15 points. There is no way that Carlisle does not know how this team is going to create offense for his scorers without interacting with Greek Freak inside the paint.

X-Factor: Bucks’ Supporting Cast

Values have been given to the Bucks’ roster players out of their star man Giannis. This means more for the Bucks’ Khris Middleton who has been an All Star for the past several seasons. Brook Lopez will play the role of a rebounder and a shot blocker around the paint. Judges will like Bobby Portis and Pat Connaughton must come through with anything from timely baskets and defensive plays. These will greatly determine how well the Bucks are capable of airing in the middle of storm that is no more Giannis.

Series Intrigue

The series has become quite complicated with Giannis on the injury list. They have proved they can win Antetokounmpo’s absence but consistent rendition of such performance will be a complex task. Yes, the Pacers have a chance to win the series by taking a game here in Milwaukee if they capitalize on the Bucks slight weakness. This first-round series has become much more interesting, at least from this perspective, due to doubts about Giannis’s availability and the plane that the Bucks can function without him.

Potential Impact of Giannis’ Injury

The cloud hanging over this series is undoubtedly Giannis Antetokounmpo’s knee injury. As to when he will be back though it is not yet clear, the void he leaves definitely changes the whole complexion of the game.

  • Bucks Offense: The big plus for the Bucks’ offence is the player’s capacity to take the ball to the basket and kick it or drive for a basket. Without him, the offense becomes more based on jump shooting and Lillard’s isolations. This could reveal frailties if groups can pack the paint and compel forced outside jumpers.

  • Bucks Defense: Even in defense, Giannis proves to be a force to reckon with as well needs to be reckoned with. His wingspan and activities are a headache to offense as he blocks the shots and discourages penetration. Thus, the Bucks’ defense will have to be downgraded to more system-driven basketball for help not showing up from its star player.

  • Pacers’ Gameplan: The Pacers now have a window of opportunity. The main idea of the game they probably started with should have been to stop Giannis at all costs. With him out, they can trail and pressure Lillard and take advantage of any Buck’s bench players they are likely to face.

Public Narrative and Pressure

The Bucks entered the playoffs as heavy favorites. It has to be said that building a win in game 1 without Giannis has really boost their morale. But the story could turn upside down if they do poorly or worse with Antetokounmpo out of the picture. The pressure will be immense on Lillard to live up to the expectations that came with his acquisition.

Looking Beyond Game 2

Still, no matter what happens in Game 2, this series looks really tough. The Bucks have also demonstrated an ability to score at a high pace whenever Antetokounmpo is off the floor; sustaining that kind of efficiency on a nightly basis, however, will be tough. This loss gives the Pacers a chance to take home-court advantage if we see more of the same next series sans Giannis.
The largest X-factor in the series still is, or perhaps more appropriately always will be: Giannis’ health. His return date will define the Bucks’ title chances as well as the landscape of the Eastern Conference playoffs.
